    Retrofitting O'Raifeartaigh Models with Dynamical Scales

    We provide a method for obtaining simple models of supersymmetry breaking, with all small mass scales generated dynamically, and illustrate it with explicit examples. We start from models of perturbative supersymmetry breaking, such as O'Raifeartaigh and Fayet models, that would respect an RR symmetry if their small input parameters transformed as the superpotential does. By coupling the system to a pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (or a more general supersymmetric gauge theory with dynamically small vacuum expectation values), these parameters are replaced by powers of its dynamical scale in a way that is naturally enforced by the symmetry. We show that supersymmetry breaking in these models may be straightforwardly mediated to the supersymmetric Standard Model, obtain complete models of direct gauge mediation, and comment on related model building strategies that arise in this simple framework.Comment: 15 pages, harvmac bi

    Latent consequences of early-life lead (Pb) exposure and the future: Addressing the Pb crisis

    Background. The lead (Pb) exposure crisis in Flint, Michigan has passed from well-publicized event to a footnote, while its biological and social impact will linger for lifetimes. Interest in the “water crisis” has dropped to pre-event levels, which is neither appropriate nor safe. Flint’s exposure was severe, but it was not unique. Problematic Pb levels have also been found in schools and daycares in 42 states in the USA. The enormity of Pb exposure via municipal water systems requires multiple responses. Herein, we focus on addressing a possible answer to long-term sequelae of Pb exposure. We propose “4R’s” (remediation, renovation, reallocation, and research) against the Pb crisis that goes beyond a short-term fix. Remediation for affected individuals must continue to provide clean water and deal with both short and long-term effects of Pb exposure. Renovation of current water delivery systems, at both system-wide and individual site levels, is necessary. Reallocation of resources is needed to ensure these two responses occur and to get communities ready for potential sequelae of Pb exposure. Finally, properly focused research can track exposed individuals and illuminate latent (presumably epigenetic) results of Pb exposure and inform further resource reallocation. Conclusion. Motivation to act by not only the general public but also by scientific and medical leaders must be maintained beyond initial news cycle spikes and an annual follow-up story. Environmental impact of Pb contamination of drinking water goes beyond one exposure incident in an impoverished and forgotten Michigan city.     Interpreter educators in the United States: Teaching, research, and practice

    In this thesis, the teaching, research, and practice of signed language interpreter educators in the United States is examined through a Critical Social Theory framework. While there is literature on interpreter educators from the perspective of program directors, very little research has been done that gathers data directly from interpreter educators. The research available leads to recommendations for instructor credentials and qualifications; however, no data exists regarding current signed language interpreter educators and whether they possess the recommended criteria. An exploratory survey was disseminated to interpreter educators in the United States to elicit information regarding their experience as signed language interpreters, as teachers, and regarding their engagement in research. Demographic information was collected to better understand how a participant’s social identity may affect program outcomes. The charts and diagrams in this study provide a broad overview of current interpreter educators, curriculum utilization, professional development, and research. The data from the survey was compared with the existing literature to assess for alignment, incongruences, and gaps. The conclusion and results from critiquing the research and the findings show there are many additional areas for research regarding interpreter educators. The results also show the need for established hiring requirements for interpreter educators, peer-reviewed course materials, effective professional development for current instructors, and an increased engagement in conducting and disseminating research. It is the recommendation that educators and researchers engage in a critical self-assessment to understand the impact of interpreter educators on program outcomes

    The nature of the absorbing torus in compact Radio Galaxies

    We present BeppoSAX observations of the two radio galaxies PKS 1934-63 and S5 1946+708. Strong Iron Kalpha lines are detected in both objects indicating that the two sources are absorbed by column densities higher than 10^24 cm^(-2). Combining radio continuum, HI absorption and X-ray data we can constrain the physical state and the dimensions of the absorber. We find that the putative obscuring torus is molecular and located at a distance higher than 20 pc from the center in S5 1946+70. In PKS 1934-63 no radio nucleus has been observed. If this is due to free-free absorption a radius of only a few pc is inferred. Since the Kalpha lines have been detected only at 90% confidence, we also discuss the implications if they would be not as strong as found from our data. From our results it appears that the combination of hard X-ray data and spatially resolved HI absorption measurements provides a powerful diagnostic for conditions in the absorbing ``torus''.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
